hybrid tea rose
Rosa 'Kaiserin Auguste Viktoria'
Rose family (Rosaceae)
The empress amongst roses
In 1890 this cream-white tea rose was launched by the German grower, P. Lambert. Kaiserin Auguste Viktoria, the first wife of the German Emperor Wilhelm, was patron of the German rose association. The emperor stayed at Doorn Manor during his exile after World War I. Here a rose garden was created during the stay of Auguste Viktoria.
In 1896 this rose was grown in Aalsmeer and was the first glasshouse cultivated rose to be grown as a cut flower. From the time this rose was first brought to auction up until 1960 the 'Kaiserin' was the longest cut rose in cultivation. Unfortunately this rose, like most white roses, have no fragrance. However, the colour white is difficult to cross breed into other roses and so it was a long time before there was a successor to this white rose.
