De vruchten kennen meerdere medische toepassingen en worden zowel in- als uitwendig gebruikt.

During its long cultivation, many cultivars have been selected with very different fruit appearance, color and taste. Plants are sometimes cultivated as ornamentals.

The pungent-fruited peppers may cause painful irritation when used in excess, or after accidental contact with the eyes. Avoid in patients taking monoamine oxidase inhibitor antidepressants and antihypertensive drugs.

De vruchten worden rauw of gekookt gegeten. Sommige variƫteiten zijn erg heet, bijvoorbeeld de chili- en cayennepeper. Ook worden deze in gedroogde vorm vermalen tot scherpe paprikapoeder. De mildere, zoete pepers, worden rauw onder andere aan salades toegevoegd. Het extract van Capsicum annuum wordt gebruikt als een voedingskleurstof met E-nummer E160.
