Het blad wordt rauw of gekookt gebruikt als smaakmaker in salades of gekookt voedsel. Het heeft een sterke pepermuntsmaak. Van het verse of gedroogde blad wordt kruidenthee gezet. Een essentiële olie uit de plant wordt gebruikt als smaakstof in snoepgoed en dranken.

Uit blad wordt een extract gewonnen voor de bereiding van Japanse muntolie, die een kalmerend, verkoelend en verdovend effect heeft. Japanse muntolie bevat een zeer hoog percentage natuurlijke menthol. Japanse munt wordt via inhalatie gebruikt bij ontsteking van het slijmvlies van de bovenste luchtwegen.

Wordt gebruikt als geurstof in tandpasta, mondwater, zeep, wasmiddelen, crèmes, lotions en parfums. De plant wordt ook gebruikt als insectenwerend middel. Ratten en muizen hebben een intense hekel aan de geur van munt.
