In Japan eet men bijna alles van de boom: de bloemen, de bessen (vers en gedroogd), de bladeren en de jonge uitlopers. Dat is andere Aziatische landen niet het geval. De onrijpe groene bessen zijn heel populair vanwege hun smaakpalet en scherpte en vanwege de verdovende werking op de tong.
